Driving for the Marion Made Fashion Show

On Saturday, I volunteered to drive for Marion Design Co. I spent an hour driving between IWU's campus and the Boston Hill Center downtown. I thought it would be a good experience and I would get to talk to people about why they were going and what they were excited to see. The reality was, I drove one person downtown in the hour I spent on the road.
The idea of shuttling people from IWU's campus to downtown seemed to me like a great idea. Sometimes, I don't feel like driving. And before this year, I didn't have a car to get around. A shuttle for events would have been perfect.
The event seemed to be well attended although I was unable to actually be there. I was surprised to find that other drivers had similar passenger loads. I thought people would use the shuttles at that particular time because it was right before the fashion show started. Instead, I had an empty van.
The hour flew by and I enjoyed the conversation with the one girl I drove. It wasn’t an unpleasant experience. It just made me wonder if the time I, and other people, put in and the gas that went into having vans driving back and forth was really worth the few people that used them. Surely, they could have found a ride with someone.
I left slightly disappointed. As the time edged closer to when I was supposed to drive, I wasn’t really looking forward to it. Still, I was interested to see who would be attending the show and to hear their conversations. I think the idea was great in theory, practically, it wasn’t the best. However, I don’t fault Marion Design Co for that. I simply think people wanted to have more control over when they could arrive and leave.
